Public Affairs brings together the English clubs from Battambong and Kampong Cham
Battambong
October 27, 2008
Public Affairs funded a recent excursion by the English Club of Kampong Cham to meet their counterparts in Battambang, a trip of about eight hours by bus from their provincial capital. Forty high school students and their head facilitator were met by the Director of the American Corner in Battambong who introduced them to their college-aged counterparts. The group had a chance to make introductions and converse a bit before heading to their hotel to prepare for their presentations. The following day both groups met at the National University of Management and, through a series of PowerPoint presentations, shared their strategies for learning and teaching English at a variety of levels. Both sides were impressed with the other’s language skills and by some of the creative ways the instructors had come up with for teaching colloquial English to ESL students. The high schoolers in particular enjoyed the chance to travel to parts of Cambodia they had never seen, and the opportunity to meet and chat with college students who shared their interest. Many said they were inspired to continue their education after this experience, and expressed the hope that some of the Battambong students would be able to make the trip to their province later this year to further their discussions.
