U.S. Embassy Helps to Train Business Journalists in Phnom Penh

Royal University of Phnom Penh
June 29 - July 02, 2009

From June 29th to July 2nd the former editor and executive from the Wall Street Journal Rusty Todd visited Phnom Penh in an effort to help jumpstart business journalism in Cambodia.  Mr. Todd is currently based in Hong Kong and is helping to launch their Masters of Journalism program at the University of Hong Kong.  In the U.S. he is a full professor at the University of Texas in Austin.  The workshop was organized by the Embassy in cooperation with the Cambodian Club of Journalists, and the course took place in their classroom.  Over twenty journalists attended from virtually every publication and broadcast outlet in the country.  Mr. Todd covered a variety of issues including reporting on the link between business and the environment and how to cover the stock exchange once it opens in 2010.  During his visit he also spoke to select students from RUPP’s Department of Media and Communications and encouraged them to be self starters and to seek out stories not only in the capital but in the provinces as well to ensure that the whole country was represented in the media.
