Celebrating Cambodian Environment Week at American Corner Battambong

American Corner, Battambong
June 04, 2009

On June 04, 2009, the U.S. Embassy participated in Cambodian Environment Week by hosting a session on energy and environmental challenges with students at the University of Management and Economics’ (UME’s) American Corner in Battambang. Students viewed an episode of the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service’s “e2 energy” series entitled “Energy for a Developing World”, which highlighted efforts by Nobel Peace Prize-winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Shakti organization to distribute small-scale solar and bio-gas systems to rural Bangladeshis.  Following the screening, the students discussed the similarities and differences between the energy needs of the communities depicted in the documentary and those of rural Cambodians.  Students explored and debated how the solutions presented in the film could be applied in Cambodia, and they brainstormed on ways to promote general environmental awareness, starting at the individual level.

After the session, UME students placed three of the Earth Day murals created by Cambodian elementary school students for the Embassy’s Earth Day celebration on the university’s fence, where they will be displayed for several weeks.
