Grant Programs

Econmic Support Fund (ESF)

Under the Economic Support Fund (ESF), the Department of State awarded $550,000 in grant in September 2004 to the World Monument Fund (WMF) for the project "Conservation and Preservation of Prasat Phnom Bakheng Historic City of Angkor, Cambodia." The temple complex was constructed in the late ninth century in Angkor, Cambodia, seat of the Khmer Empire (802-1462). Despite its importance, Phnom Bakheng is perhaps the least understood and explored of the major temple complexes in what is today known as the Historic City of Angkor. The project represents the first time that the United States government has directly supported conservation work in Angkor. The grant was announced at a meeting of the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor (ICC).
