Ambassador Rodley Hosts Delegation from the Freer and Sackler Galleries

Phnom Penh
October 26, 2009

On the evening of the 26th the U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, Carol A. Rodley, hosted a reception at her residence designed to welcome visiting officials from the Freer and Sackler Galleries to Cambodia and to announce the upcoming exhibition of Angkorian bronzes at the Sackler in May of 2010.  The evening’s event was attended by representatives from the business and arts communities in Phnom Penh, and was a chance for the assembled guests to share ideas and talk about the status of the arts in both countries and possible future exchanges.

The big news was the announcement of the exhibit which will also travel to the Getty museum in Los Angeles after its run at the Sackler. The bronzes, on loan from the National Museum, will give a wide audience the opportunity to experience the wonder of the Angkorian period and for many of them it will be their first interaction with Cambodian art and history. In her speech, Ambassador Rodley stated that, “It’s an important first step but I hope it will not end there. Those of us that live in Phnom Penh know that the arts scene here is on the verge of amazing things, and I hope that those of you who are coming from abroad are able to feel some of that energy here tonight and that this will lead to other exhibits in the future”.
