U.S. Marines Provide Medical Services in Kampot Province
Wat Prey Tom
September 12-22, 2007
Marine Forces Pacific recently teamed up with the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) for a Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) in Kampot Province. The MEDCAP was part of the Cambodian Interoperability Program being conducted by U.S. Marine Forces Command.
Twenty U.S. Navy and Marine medical personnel with the Third Marine Logistic Group from Okinawa, Japan worked side-by-side with ten RCAF medical personnel to deliver basic care to villagers at Wat Prey Tom, about 4 kilometers outside of Kampot City. During the program, the U.S. and Cambodian doctors and medical personnel performed the following actions to support the population of Kampot province:
- The Medical Staff provided General Medical care to the local population.
- A Bio-Medical Repair Technician repaired equipment at the Kampot Referral Hospital. These repairs will raise the level of care that can be offered at the facility and provide a long lasting benefit to the local community.
- Preventive Medicine Technicians provided mosquito abatement services and taught basic sanitation classes to the local population.
- Dentists from the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Public Health Service and the Kampot Operational District provided Dental Treatment.
The initial planning meeting to provide health care services in this area took place in July at the Kampot Provincial Department of Health. The main organizers of the event were the Deputy Director of the Kampot Provincial Health Department, Dr. Touch Sokha, and the Officer–In-Charge of the mission, Lieutenant Brookes Englebert, a U.S. Navy nurse and Detachment Commander. Letters of agreement for the event were exchanged by the Kampot Governor’s Office and the U.S. Embassy in late July.
Over the course of the 11-day event, the medical teams treated nearly 5000 persons, averaging 450 patients per day. Additionally, seven patients needing dire medical attention were transported to the Children's Surgical Center in Phnom Penh for further treatment. The MEDCAP ended with a special closing ceremony on September 22.
