United States Donates Life-Saving Medical Equipment

Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE, Phnom Penh
June 09, 2009

The United States donated close to $500,000 worth of medical equipment to Phnom Penh’s Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE this week.  The 85 pieces of equipment will support the life-saving treatment and diagnosis of patients, including the 3,000 HIV-positive patients under the hospital’s care.

U.S. Ambassador Carol A. Rodley and Minister of Health Dr. Mam Bun Heng presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the equipment on Tuesday, June 9.  In her remarks, Ambassador Rodley praised the hospital’s staff.

“Not only is this one of the busiest adult hospitals in Cambodia, it is one of the best.  The hardworking staff here provides the poor with health care of the highest standard at no charge,” she said.

The United States has supported the hospital since 2003.  American individuals and corporations also contribute support, making it a model of cooperation between the public and private sectors.  Founded in 1996, the hospital will treat its one millionth patient in November.
