TOEFL Practice Training Program in Battambang and Kampong Cham Provinces
Battambang, Cambodia
August 15th, 2009
Throughout the month of August, over 300 undergraduate students in Kampong Cham and Battambang Provinces joined Public Affairs staff from the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh for mock TOEFL testing. As part of it’s educational exchange programs, the U.S. Embassy through the Public Affairs Section has been working closely with Cambodian Fulbright Alumni to improve English proficiency scores in the Kingdom of Cambodia. On August 1st and 15th, Public Affairs Staffer and Fulbright Alumnus Chau Samphas, who completed his Master’s degree in TESL at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign in 2005, conducted the “TOEFL Practice Training Program”, at the University of Management and Economics (UME) in Battambang and Kampong Cham Provinces. Mr. Phat Pich, who recently completed his BBA at the University of Management and Economics (UME) in Battambang, stated that, “this was my first time to take this test and it was extremely important for me. Because of this experience, I will now be able to set up a study plan to improve my English proficiency.” Mr. Phann Sophon, UME Vice Rector in Battambang, stated that he appreciated the TOEFL Practice Training Program carried out by the Public Affairs Section. Mr. Phann Sophon stated that, “the testing was a significant tool for the improvement of English teaching and learning programs here at my institution.” By working with Fulbright Alumni throughout Cambodia, the U.S. Embassy has been committed to improving English teaching programs in Regional Teacher Training Centers and higher educational institutions throughout the nation. Currently, the Public Affairs Section is planning for the same mock TOEFL testing that took place in Battambang and Kampong Cham, to be conducted in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville Provinces in early September 2009.
