Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte begins his official visit to Cambodia with a stop in Siem Riep

Siem Riep
September 14, 2008

Deputy Secretary John D. Negroponte spent Sunday the 14th of September in Siem Riep visiting with several NGOs and touring the Angkor Wat Archaeological complex before moving on to Phnom Penh for his official meetings. The Deputy made stops at the Angkor Children’s Hospital which receives support from USAID for their pediatric AIDS and Avian Influenza treatment projects. That afternoon Mr. John Stubbs, a representative from the World Monuments Fund (WMF) which is a recent recipient of a $1,000,000 State Department grant, toured the Angkor Wat complex with Ambassador Negroponte and focused particularly on their restoration project at Phnom Bakheng. WMF received the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation grant to begin work on shoring up and rehabilitating the east façade of the temple, famed for its view of the sunset over the Cambodian countryside. The tour group, which also included Deputy Assistant Secretary Scot Marciel, visited the main Angkor Wat temple and the site of the reclining Buddha at Phnom Baphuon as well. That evening the Deputy met with a number of business and NGO leaders to discuss the linkages between the development sector and commerce, particularly in the area of agriculture.
