Writing Contest Awards Ceremony
Released in Phnom Penh, June 02, 2009
The U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, Carol A. Rodley, and Cambodia's Secretary of State for Education, Youth and Sports, H.E. Mak Van, will preside over an awards ceremony for winners of the First Annual Mark Twain Essay Writing Contest.
Six essays have been selected for certificates and prizes. In addition to the six winning students, eleven students will also receive a certificate of honorable mention.
The Mark Twain Essay Contest was created by the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh in order to help encourage Cambodian high school students to explore the wonders of creative writing. The opening of the contest was announced to five local high schools on March 23, 2009 and students were invited to write a 3-7 page fictional story with a moral lesson in Khmer. By April 27, 2009, the Embassy had received over 130 essays. The Embassy is proud of all the submitted essays and has invited all students who submitted stories to attend the ceremony.
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 9:00 a.m., at the U.S. Embassy. Members of the press are invited to attend. Please confirm your attendance by 5:00 p.m. on June 4 by contacting the Embassy’s Public Affairs Section by telephone (023) 728-258 or by e-mail to ChreaV@state.gov. Members of the press are requested to arrive by 8:30 a.m. to clear security.
