U.S. Provides Assistance to Reform Cambodia’s Public Financial System

Released in Phnom Penh, July 06, 2009

The U.S. Treasury Department has announced its intention to provide technical assistance to the Royal Government of Cambodia to support the country’s public management reform program and efforts to improve fiscal controls and promote greater transparency in financial transactions.

During a meeting on July 6th between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economy and Finance Keat Chhon and U.S. Ambassador Carol A. Rodley, Mr. Michael Ruffner from the Treasury Department’s Office of Technical Assistance (OTA) announced the U.S. government’s decision to provide technical assistance to strengthen capacity of the Royal Government in the area of public financial management reform.  The assistance is designed to help Cambodia strengthen the enforcement of laws and controls as they relate to budgeting and financial accountability, banking and financial services, the insurance and financial industries, and tax administration and collection.  The financial management and accountability assistance programs are expected to begin within the next few months.

The mission of the U.S. Treasury Department’s technical assistance program is to support the development of strong financial sectors and sound public financial management in countries where assistance is needed and there is a strong commitment to reform.
