Pursat Province
September 28, 2009

On Monday Sept. 28th, the U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, Carol A. Rodley, and the Cambodian Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, H.E. Im Sethy, presided over a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Pursat High School.  In her address to over 5000 students and teachers from the province, Ambassador Rodley stated that, “we, at the U.S. Embassy, are excited to have played a role in the reconstruction of Pursat High School.  As you may already know, Pursat High School was originally built by the U.S. Government in 1962.  The fact that we are here today, forty seven years later, points the depth and longevity of our involvement with Cambodia and our dedication to helping the Royal Government improve the education system, both in terms of human capacity and infrastructure.”

Through the PACOM Humanitarian Assistance and Humanitarian Civic Action program, the U.S. government has spent nearly $ 1 million dollars in Pursat Province on assistance projects.  The U.S. initiative not only funded the renovation of Pursat High School, but also the renovations of 4 other buildings in the region including the Reno Tasah Health Clinic, the Prongil Primary School, the Keo Sovann Middle School, and the Sophy Primary School.  In addition to these renovation projects, a U.S. Marine medical capability exercise was organized in Bakan District which helped over 2000 residents with their ailments.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Minster of Education, Youth and Sports, H.E. Im Sethy, expressed his sincere thanks to the U.S. government for its support to the Cambodian education sector.  He said that “the improvement of the education sector is one the priorities of the Royal government of Cambodia, and my ministry is pleased to continue working with development partners such as the United States to improve the education system in Cambodia.”
