Second Group of Peace Corps Volunteers Cambodia Sworn in

Kompong Chhnang province
October 04, 2008

On Saturday the 4th of October the Chargé d’affaires Piper Campbell administered the oath to 32 new Peace Corps volunteers at their training site in Kampong Chnnang.  The in country director Jon Darrah and newly appointed Minister of Education Im Sethy also spoke to the newly minted volunteers which has just completed their 10 week training course and will head up English classes in over 10 provinces on the 6th of October.  In her speech the Charge stressed the fact that the new group will be cultural ambassadors not only for the U.S., but also for Cambodia upon their return to their “normal” lives as student, teachers and professionals in their home country.  Several of the volunteers also delivered remarks in near flawless Khmer, impressing not only Minister and the Chargé but also members of the press corps who made the trip to the provinces to cover the swearing in ceremony.  One individual in particular gave a short interview in Khmer after only two months of language training.

The Volunteers will work under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) to teach English at the Upper Secondary Schools and at Regional Teacher Training Centers in a number of provinces including Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhang, Kampong Thom, and Kampot.  Their training has included instruction in the Khmer language and culture, personal health and safety, and instruction in teaching English.  There are now 59 volunteers serving two year tours in Cambodia.
