Remarks by Deputy Chief of Mission Theodore Allegra at the Signing of an Amendment to a Bilateral Agreement on Economic Growth

Office of the Council of Ministers, Phnom Penh
September 23, 2009

It’s a pleasure to be here to reaffirm the commitment of the American people to improving the lives of the Cambodian people through economic growth.

As the Cambodian economy has grown in recent years, the living standards of many Cambodians have increased.  The United States is pleased to have played a small part in this success with our Economic Growth program.

By working side by side with our Cambodian colleagues, we have helped thousands of rural entrepreneurs increase their sales, providing them with better health care, education for their children, and opportunities to expand their businesses.

With these new funds, the United States looks forward to continuing our relationships with these businesses.  We also look forward to forming relationships with new businesses and working in new provinces and sectors.

We’re also pleased to continue supporting the Cambodian government’s efforts to improve the business climate, both to attract investment from abroad and to ensure that domestic firms reach their full competitive potential.

I’m excited about the impact this program is having on the lives of thousands of Cambodians.  We’re pleased to continue this collaboration with Cambodian entrepreneurs, and I look forward to seeing more positive results in the future.
