Embassy celebrates historic election victory by Barack Obama
US Embassy
November 5, 2008
On the morning of November 5th the Embassy watched as Barack Obama was elected President of the United States with well over 100 guests from the Cambodian government, NGO sector and academia. It was a special day for the staff as they welcomed not only a new President elect but also the new Ambassador designate Carol Rodley who arrived in Cambodia just hours before the event. The guests began arriving early, around 10:00 am, and the atrium of the Embassy was packed by the time CNN called the election for Senator Obama. Shortly after Senator McCain delivered his gracious concession speech the Chargé d’Affaires Piper Campbell spoke to the assembled guests stressing that the party was not a partisan event but a celebration of the democratic process. She also noted that there has been a peaceful transition of power from one administration to the next 55 times in our country’s history, and that we should expect nothing different over the next 72 days of transition. The Chargé also announced the results of our mock election which was held not only at the Embassy but also at the American Corners in Battambong and at Pannasastra University. The votes overwhelmingly favored Barack Obama for the presidency, matching the opinion of the American electorate.
