Chargé d’affaires Piper Campbell visits Access Students in Kampot

Kampot Province
September 25, 2008

On the 25th of September the Chargé d’affaires Piper Campbell visited with twelve students who are currently studying English under the auspices of the Access Microscholarship program.  The program provides grants to non-governmental organizations which help to support underprivileged children in their quest to improve their language skills and their prospects for employment in the future.  The students showed off their language skills with the Chargé, and even asked her to teach a lesson from their workbook in order to help “Americanize” their pronunciation.  After the discussion the students received backpacks and additional English learning materials provided by the Embassy.

The Access Microscholorship Program has provided grants that have helped several hundred children over the past five years improve their English language ability in several different Cambodian provinces including Kampot, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom and Ratanakiri.  The project in Kampot is administered by the Cambodia Islamic Women’s Development Association, and classes are held at the University of Management and Economics.
